Knee pain that develops gradually can often be due to issues with the kneecap (patello-femoral joint), but can also be due to degenerative changes like arthritis, cartilage damage or tendon issues. Persistent locking, catching or giving way can be indicators of structural damage requiring health professional review, as can persisting swelling.
Acute knee trauma often occurs on the sports field, but can also occur through motor vehicle accidents, slips and falls. These injuries can incorporate damage to the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments and cartilage around the knee.
